The Edmonton Oilers placed defenseman Cody Ceci in the COVID-19 protocol Tuesday and canceled practice for what the team labeled as precautionary reasons.

The Oilers also shuffled Duncan Keith to injured reserve and recalled fellow defenseman Markus Niemelainen from Bakersfield of the American Hockey League.

Ceci, 27, has recorded six points (one goal, five assists) in 20 games this season.

Ceci has 149 points (38 assists, 111 assists) in 569 career games with the Ottawa Senators (2013-19), Toronto Maple Leafs (2019-20), Pittsburgh Penguins (2020-21) and Oilers.

Keith, 38, sustained an upper-body injury in Edmonton's 4-1 loss to the Dallas Stars last Tuesday.

He has five points (one goal, four assists) in 18 games this season.

Keith helped the Chicago Blackhawks hoist the Stanley Cup in 2010, 2013 and 2015. He won the Conn Smythe Trophy during the 2015 Stanley Cup Final against the Tampa Bay Lightning, and won the Norris Trophy as the league's top defenseman in 2009-10 and 2013-14.

Niemelainen, 23, has three points (one goal, two assists) in 14 games this season with the Condors.
