MUNICH, Germany: Amazon has announced that employees at its Germany-based warehouse facilities will receive an hourly pay increase to 12 EUR for entry-level positions.

The pay increase comes amid a protracted fight with trade unions.

Germany is the leading market for the retail giant worldwide, with the U.S. being second.

In Germany, the Verdi trade union has kept up the pressure on Amazon, with regular demonstrations during the past eight years.

The wage increase will come into effect beginning next month.

Amazon's pay has surpassed the current minimum hourly pay in Germany of 9.50 EUR.

Amazon, which reported Q1 profits of $8.1 billion, an over three-fold rise as compared to $2.5 billion during the corresponding period of 2020, was also criticized by trade unions for conditions and wages globally.

A Germany-based spokesperson of the company has said that additional raises are planned in the coming period.
