Over a million people petition in the U.K. against Trump’s state visit

LONDON, U.K. - Following Trump's executive order restricting immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries and ordering a temporary ban on refugee resettlement, a petition to prevent the U.S. president to make an official state visit to the United Kingdom is on track to get one million signatures.

Prior to the order, British lawyer Graham Guest's petition on the U.K. government and parliament website, titled “Prevent Donald Trump from making a State Visit to the United Kingdom,” had earned just 372 signatures since the end of November.

According to the website, any petition that gets more than 100,000 signatures can be taken up for consideration by the U.K. parliament.

The petition says a state visit from Trump would "cause embarrassment to Her Majesty the Queen."

"Donald Trump should be allowed to enter the U.K. in his capacity as head of the U.S. Government," the petition reads, "but he should not be invited to make an official State Visit because it would cause embarrassment to Her Majesty the Queen."

"Donald Trump's well documented misogyny and vulgarity disqualifies him from being received by Her Majesty the Queen or the Prince of Wales. Therefore during the term of his presidency Donald Trump should not be invited to the United Kingdom for an official State Visit," the petition reads.

Signatures are currently rising at an average of more than 1,000 signatures per minute and the petition is already the third most popular petition in the U.K. parliament's history.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who urged followers to support the petition, tweeted on Sunday, "@Theresa_May would be failing the British people if she does not postpone the state visit & condemn Trump's actions in the clearest terms."

"@realDonaldTrump should not be welcomed to Britain while he abuses our shared values with shameful #MuslimBan & attacks on refugees & women," he added.

Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron supported the move.

He said, "Any visit by President Trump to Britain should be on hold until his disgraceful ban comes to an end.”

"Otherwise Theresa May would be placing the Queen in an impossible position of welcoming a man who is banning British citizens purely on grounds of their faith."

The U.K. government has rejected calls to cancel Trump's proposed visit to the country, despite pressure from the opposition following the furor over his controversial action.

No date has been set for the visit, but it is likely to take place sometime this year.

According to a Downing Street source, "America is a huge important ally. We have to think long term."
